(1) Header board required. See the Header Board Specification (DS51292) for a list of available headers by device number. This document is available in the “Downloads” section of the PICkit 2 web page.

(2) Header board available, but not required. See the Header Board Specification (DS51292) for a list of available headers by device number.

(3) PICkit 2 does not support the optional header for this device at this time.

NOTE: To connect PICkit 2 to a debug header board requires the AC164110 RJ-11 to ICSP Adapter.

NOTE: PICkit 2 reserves 64 bytes less flash memory than the MPLAB ICD 2 for the PIC18F2682, PIC18F2685, PIC18F4682 and PIC18F4685 devices.

2         Operating System Support List

This tool has been tested under the following operating systems:

Windows® 2000 SP4, Windows XP SP2, and Windows Vista™ (32-Bit)* OSs

* 64-bit Vista is not supported at this time.

NOTE: Windows NT® and Windows 98/ME OSs are NOT supported.

IMPORTANT NOTICE: Beginning with MPLAB IDE v7.51, MPLAB IDE and PICkit 2 will no longer be tested on Windows 98, Windows ME, or Windows NT® OSs. MPLAB IDE and PICkit 2 may continue to work under these operating systems, but their operation will no longer be verified through testing.

4         What's New in v8.14

·         Debug support for dsPIC30F devices and dsPIC33FJ128GP804 family devices.

·         Support for multiple MPLAB PICkit 2 units on one PC. Use multiple PICkit 2 units and multiple instances of the MPLAB IDE to debug multiple PIC MCUs on one PC.
NOTE: No workspace, including the default workspace, may be opened by more than one instance of the MPLAB IDE. If attempted, a “Lock Violation” error will be given. To use multiple instances of the MPLAB IDE, follow these steps:
- Start the first instance of the MPLAB IDE, via the Start Menu or desktop icon
- Open a project workspace in this MPLAB IDE
- Start a second instance of the MPLAB IDE, via the Start Menu or desktop icon
- Open a different project workspace in the second MPLAB IDE

When selecting PICkit 2 as a Debugger or Programmer, MPLAB IDE will ask which PICkit 2 Unit you wish to use if more than one is detected. Unique Unit ID strings may be assigned to each PICkit 2 unit using the PICkit 2 Programmer software v2.40 or later.

·         New PICkit 2 Setting (Debugger > Settings and Programmer > Settings) “Use target power always”. Checking this setting means PICkit 2 will never attempt to power the target from the PICkit 2 VDD pin, and the target must have its own power supply. The PICkit 2 VDD pin must still be connected to the target for the PICkit 2 unit to work.

·         New Toolbar Icon for Advanced Breakpoints when using PICkit 2 as a debugger.  Click the “ADV” and blue circle icon to open the Advanced Breakpoints dialog for devices that support this feature.

·         Debug Toolbar shows at a glance how many breakpoints for the target device are available and how many are in use. For devices with Advanced Breakpoints, clicking the “i” information circle will display how many breakpoints are in program memory, and how many are in the File Registers. PICkit 2 does not support software breakpoints or data capture breakpoints, so these elements are unused.

·         PICkit 2 now validates the target Device ID on all programming operations, except on Baseline devices which do not have Device IDs. This can alert the user if the device has become disconnected when attempting a Read operation.

5         Repairs and Enhancements Made in v8.14

·         Fixed a bug causing debug failure on dsPIC33 and PIC24 devices with an oscillator running over 40 MHz. These devices will now debug reliably with oscillators over 40 MHz.

·         The following older revisions of the listed PIC18 devices now require the Power-Up-Timer to be turned off when debugging. The MPLAB IDE will warn the user if the PUT is enabled.
PIC18F4620/4610/2620/2610                                       Rev A only
PIC18F4680/2680/4682/2682                                       Rev A only
PIC18F4520/4420/2520/2420                                       Rev A only
PIC18F4550/2550/4455/2455                                       Rev A2, Rev A3 has fix
PIC18F8490/8410/6490/6410/8390/8310/6390/6310       Rev A only
PIC18F8722/8627/8622/8527/6722/6627/6622/6527       Rev A1 only
PIC18F2525/4525                                                       Rev A only

·         PICkit 2 will no longer create “phantom breakpoints” if a program memory breakpoint is changed while PICkit 2 is de-selected as a debugger on devices supporting Advanced Breakpoints.

6         Known Problems

The following is a list of known problems. For more information on operation, please see the online help file for the PICkit 2 (hlpPICkit2.chm). Bolded prefix represents internal tracking numbers.

·         To use the PICkit 2 as a debugger, two 4.7KW pull-down resistors are needed on pins ICSPDAT and ICSPCLK for units with a black pushbutton.  Units with a red pushbutton have the pull-down resistors already internal to the unit.

PK2-17:

When the PIC18F8680 Oscillator Config bits are set for "HS - hardware enabled 4x PLL", the first attempted ICSP communication after VDD is applied fails. Suggested work-arounds:

PICkit 2 Programmer Application

If powering from PICkit 2:

1) Check the VDD PICkit 2 "On" checkbox under the Microchip logo.

2) Select "Device Family > PIC18F" until the PIC18F8680 is detected.

3) It should now program properly as long as VDD is not interrupted

If powering externally:

1) Select "Device Family > PIC18F" until the PIC18F8680 is detected.

2) It should now program properly as long as VDD is not interrupted

PICkit 2 from MPLAB IDE

If powering from PICkit 2:

1) This only needs be done after first selecting PICkit 2 as the programmer, or after PICkit 2 is first connected to the target.

2) Select "Programmer > Verify" - it doesn't matter the results; this is just to the 8680 out of the problem state.

3) It should now program properly as long as VDD is not interrupted

If powering externally:

1) This only needs be done after first applying power and connecting PICkit 2 to the target board

2) Select "Programmer > Verify" - it doesn't matter the results; this is just to the 8680 out of the problem state.

3) It should now program properly as long as VDD is not interrupted

PK2-46:

PICkit 2 may not enter debug mode when 32 KHz LP oscillator is selected as clock source for PIC16F505, PIC12F508, PIC12F509.

PK2-53:

With 'reset to beginning of the main’ enabled, setting advance breakpoint on data memory with non zero pass count and then disabling it, might result in all debugger option to disable.

ICD2-81

MPLAB PICkit 2 fails to program/verify the PIC24FJ128GA010 device when user code does runtime flash erase /write operation. It appears the device is executing code before the full programming cycle is complete.

For PIC24F devices during a programming/verify operation (or subsequent verification operation) of user code that performs self-writes and/or self-erases to program space, a verify sequence may fail if the code execution occurs within the first execution cycles following reset.

Workaround: Place a delay in your code before the code section that performs the self-write and/or self-erase.

The specific delay value may need to be adjusted, but 100 ms would be a conservative value to start

out with. Here is a C language example that illustrates the workaround:

int main (void)

{

// Place 100 ms delay here before any self-write/self-erase code

        .       .       .

        .       .       .

        .       .       .

}
